WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The second-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team jumped out to an early lead, but were unable to hold off Virginia as the Cavaliers notched a pair of second-half goals to get past the Demon Deacons, 2-1, in the ACC opener for both squads at Spry Stadium Friday night.
Wake Forest (3-1-1, 0-1-0 ACC) came out of the locker room and pounced on visiting Virginia (4-1-0, 1-0-0 ACC) just minutes into the match. The Demon Deacs served the ball deep into the Cavalier penalty area to the foot of senior James Riley, but Riley was unable to gain possession. In the attempt to clear the ball, Virginia played in directly to fellow Wake Forest senior Stephen Keel who blasted it into the far upper corner at 4:41 to give the Deacs the 1-0 lead.
The Demon Deacons controlled the rest of the first 45-minutes and took the one goal advantage into the second stanza, but the Cavaliers came out much more aggressive in the second-half. Virginia was rewarded with the equalizer in the 61st minute. Nico Colaluca streaked down the center of the Wake Forest defense and laid off the ball to Ian Holder just outside the six-yard box. Holder then snuck the ball under a charging Demon Deacon goaltender Brian Edwards to even the match, 1-1. The goal was Holder's first of the season.
Virginia struck again just 10 minutes later. After a bad Wake Forest give away at the midfield stripe, John Hartman found Matt Ayotte all alone just outside the 18-yard box. Ayotte then calmly slipped the ball past Edwards into the far right corner at 70:53 to give Virginia its first lead of the match.
The Demon Deacons continuously assaulted the Cavalier penalty area over the game's final 15 minutes, but were unable to find the net. Both junior Michael Parkhurst and senior Scott Sealy each had blasts from just outside the penalty area skip just wide of the net.
As expected in this heated rivalry, the match was filled with whistles, fouls, yellow cards and flaring tempers. Virginia was whistled for 19 fouls to Wake Forest's 14. The Cavaliers were issued six yellow cards, including five in the second-half, while the Deacs were issued just one.
The Demon Deacons out-shot Virginia, 13-8, and registered seven corner kicks to the Cavaliers one. Virginia goalkeeper Ryan Burke recorded five saves in the victory, while Edwards picked up a pair in defeat.
The Cavaliers have now beaten Wake Forest five consecutive times and the Cavaliers snapped the Deacons 13-match regular season home winning streak. Wake Forest also saw an end to its regular season unbeaten streak of 29 games at Spry Stadium. The Demon Deacons last regular season home loss came on September 8, 2001 against Dartmouth.
Wake Forest returns to action this Tuesday evening against 13th-ranked UNC Greensboro. Kickoff is scheduled for Spry Stadium at 7 p.m.
