WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The 13th-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team dropped its second straight match Tuesday night as 15th-ranked UNC Greensboro slipped past the Demon Deacons, 2-1, at Spry Stadium.
After finding themselves down 1-0 just seven minutes into the match, Wake Forest (3-2-1) finally equalized in the 79th minute. Sophomore Ryan Solle and senior Stephen Keel combined to find senior Scott Sealy alone in the penalty area. Sealy got behind the UNCG (5-0-1) defense and tucked his sixth goal of the season under Spartan goalkeeper Jay Benfield. Sealy now has 32 goals in his Demon Deacon career.
The tie would last all of 15 seconds. The Spartans would take the ensuing kickoff and send the ball deep into the Wake Forest penalty area where Egill Atlason would layoff a header to the foot of Matt Smith. Smith, a substitute that entered the match just minutes before, beat one Demon Deacon defender and blasted the go-ahead goal into the far right corner. The goal was Smith's first of his career.
Wake Forest continued to mount an attack despite the deficit. The Demon Deacons seemed to penetrate the Spartan box at will, but were not able ultimately break the UNCG defense. Benfield made four saves on the evening, including a number of quality stops to prevent Wake Forest from getting even a second time.
The Demon Deacons outshot the Spartans, 14-7, including 9-2 in the second-half. Wake Forest accounted for an incredible 15 corner kicks, while UNCG only mustered three.
With the loss, the Demon Deacons have now dropped consecutive matches at Spry Stadium for the first time since the 1997 season. Wake Forest last lost back-to-back games on Oct. 15 and Oct. 19 of that season against Duke and Davidson. The victory for UNCG was their first over the Demon Deacs since 1989, snapping the Wake Forest five match winning streak over the Spartans.
Wake Forest returns to action this Friday evening against SEC rival South Carolina. Kickoff is scheduled for Spry Stadium at 7 p.m.
