WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - For the third consecutive match, the 13th-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team dominated the game from penalty area to penalty area only to come away with a loss each time. The Demon Deacons were done in when South Carolina's J.D. Moon scored the game's only goal in the 73rd minute to lead the Gamecocks past the Demon Deacons, 1-0, in men's soccer action from Spry Stadium Friday night.
Despite the Deacs mounting attack after attack, South Carolina got on the board midway through the second-half after Wake Forest lost possession at the midfield stripe. Sebastian Lindholm streaked down the left wing and slotted the ball back across the goalmouth to an open Moon. The freshman forward drilled a one-timer into the lower left corner for his first career goal.
The Demon Deacons continued to pester the Gamecock defense. Time and time again, Wake Forest fired shots toward the South Carolina net, but were not rewarded with a goal. It appeared as though the Demon Deacons were going to be the beneficiaries of good fortune when Makan Hislop picked up his second yellow card and was ejected in the 79th minute.
Wake Forest would play the final 11 minutes up one player, but the Gamecocks packed the box bringing all nine field players back behind the ball. The Demon Deacons best chance to score came in the match's final minute. Senior Scott Sealy beat a pair of South Carolina defenders and came open just inside the 18-yard box and blistered a shot toward the Gamecock net, but Brad Guzan made the save.
With the loss, South Carolina improves to 5-1-1, while the Demon Deacons drop their third straight match and fall to 3-3-1. The loss not only snapped Wake Forest's two-match winning streak over the Gamecocks, but it also gave the Deacs their first three-match losing streak since 1997. In fact, the Demon Deacons have now dropped three consecutive home matches for the first time since the 1986 season.
Wake Forest outshot South Carolina, 17-7, including 12-5 in the second-half. The Deacs recorded nine corner kicks, while the Gamecocks managed just three. Guzan finished the evening with six saves to record his third shutout of the season, while Wake Forest goalkeeper Brian Edwards made three saves.
Wake Forest returns to action this Tuesday evening against in Blacksburg, Va. against new ACC rival Virginia Tech. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Deacs faced the Hokies in Blacksburg last season and walked away with a hard-fought 1-0 victory.
