Winston-Salem, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's basketball team will return to ACC action Thursday night, as the Demon Deacons travel to Coral Gables, Fla. to face conference newcomers, Miami at 7 p.m. The Deacs enter the game with an 11-4 overall record and 0-2 in the ACC, while the Hurricanes boast a 8-6 mark and a 0-1 record in the conference.
The Deacs are coming off a commanding 86-37 victory over Savannah State on Monday night. In the final non-conference game of the season, junior Porsche' Jones made history, becoming the first Wake Forest women's basketball player to earn a double-double with steals and points. Despite just missing a triple-double by one assists, Jones' nine was also a record for the most assists in a game, while her 10 steals was a record for the most steals in a game.
Among ACC competitors, the Deacs are faring well so far, boasting 11 players in the top-5 of eight different statistical categories including junior Cotelia Bond-Young on the top of 3-pointers made list. Senior Erin Ferrell is second in rebounding and defensive rebounds, while Jones boasts the second best assist to turnover ratio. As a team, the Deacs are in the top-5 for 12 of the 19 categories, including the highest free throw percentage and 3-point field goals made.
Miami, who opened its first ACC game with a loss to Florida State, will be led by junior Tamara James. James, 5-9 forward, is averaging 24.4 points per game, which includes a 39 point outing against Fairfield. The ACC scoring leader was named the conference player of the week on Jan. 3 after putting up 36 against Coppin State.
If the Deacons defeat the Hurricanes, it will be head coach Mike Petersen's 200th career victory in addition to his first ACC win.
