Winston-Salem, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's basketball team returns to the court Sunday afternoon to take on Clemson in its fifth ACC game of the season after a tough loss to #1/1 Duke on Thursday night. Boasting a 12-5 overall record and a 1-3 ACC mark, the Demon Deacons are statistically among the leaders in the ACC in several categories and will look for their first conference victory at the Joel.
The two teams will meet on the hardwood for the 50th time and the Demon Deacons looks to earn their 10th victory over the Tigers to improve their overall series record to 40-10 and 7-18 in Winston-Salem. Last defeating Clemson on Feb. 27, 2002, senior Erin Ferrell led Wake Forest to a 66-55 victory with 15 points. Also in that game, junior Cotelia Bond-Young added 13, including shooting 9-of-12 from the line.
Despite the 99-86 loss to Duke, the Demon Deacons have no reason to complain about their performance, as they put up the most points of any Blue Devil opponent since the 2001 NCAA tournament. Additionally, Wake forced 11 turnovers and put up the highest field goal percentage of any of Duke's other competitors this season. Against Duke, Bond-Young dished out 24 points and 11 assists, which was the first double-double in those two categories since Gretchen Hollifield did it during the 1996 season.
Clemson enters the game on Sunday coming off a loss to Virginia Tech on Thursday night and boasts a 7-8 overall record and a 2-5 record in the ACC. In conference competition so far this season, the Tigers only victory came against NC State, a team the Wake Forest fell to 81-55. The Tigers will be led on the wood by Reggie Maddox a 5-9 junior who is averaging 10.8 points per game and 5.8 boards. As a team, the Tigers average 64.0 points per game with a .369 field goal percentage.
After Clemson, the Deacs will travel to Blacksburg, Va., where they will face ACC newcomers Virginia Tech. The game against the Hokies will also be the second nationally televised game of the season.
