Deacon Golfers Back In Action Monday And Tuesday

Eighth-ranked Wake Forest plays its second event of the fall season Monday and Tuesday at Richmond in the Mattaponi (pronounced matta-pone-aye) Springs Collegiate Shootout.

The Demon Deacons and 13 other teams will play 54 holes over two days at the Richmond area's newest golf course, a 6,937-yard, par-72 layout. The tournament, which will be featured on the Golf Channel's College Golf Central, will also offer live scoring throughout the event at golfstat.com.

The Shootout will begin with a College-Am on Sunday, pairing amateurs with a college player from their favorite team. Collegiate play will then begin with 36-holes on Monday, followed by a single and final round of competition on Tuesday.


Mattaponi Springs, which opened Nov. 1, 2004 in Ruther Glen, Va., in located at the junction of 95 and 301, between Fredericksburg and Richmond. For directions and course information, please visit Mattaponi Springs' website at mattaponisprings.com.

The Demon Deacons are led by senior Kyle Reifers, a third team All-American in 2005, and sophomore Webb Simpson, who shot three rounds of par or better in Wake's opening tournament last week in Oregon. Also representing Wake next week will be junior Sean Moore, senior Doug Manchester and sophomore Chad Wilcox. Freshman Marc Gladson will participate as an individual.
