Winston-Salem, N.C. - The No. 12 Wake Forest women's soccer team could not capitalize on two early goals and fell to Clemson, 3-2. The Deacons (8-5-1, 3-4 ACC) scored twice in the first nine minutes of the match but could not find the back of the net in the final 81 minutes.
The first Demon Deacon goal came just four minutes into the game as Elizabeth Remy netted her fifth goal of the year. Freshman Amanda Lebo served a corner kick into the box, and the junior Norman, Okla., native knocked in a shot in front of the far post. Lebo earned her third assist of the year.
Clemson tied the score in the seventh minute of the match when Allison Graham stayed onside for just long enough to receive a pass from Britten Meyer. Deacon goalkeeper Heather Currie tried to get to the ball, but Graham knocked in the shot from 14 yards out to tie the score at 1-1.
Wake Forest regained the lead 8:20 into the match when senior Sarah Kozey scored her seventh goal of the year. A Deacon foul set up a Tiger attack, but senior Melanie Schneider headed the ball clear of the box. Kozey collected the pass and fed it to Remy who pushed the counterattack up the right side. Remy hit Kozey with a pass at the top of the box, and the forward netted a shot in the lower left corner of the goal.
In the 35th minute, Clemson knotted the score again when Fraser Gerth scored from just in front of the goal. Graham fed a pass to Jacquelyn Hines who dribbled the ball to the endline. Hines served a pass to the near post, and Gerth knocked in the shot past Currie's hands.
Clemson scored the match's final tally just four minutes later when Graham scored her second goal on the day. A Wake Forest foul just outside the top of the box set up a direct kick for Clemson. Graham sent a low shot into the lower right corner of the goal to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead.
The Deacons had several scoring opportunities in the second half but could not tie the match.
In the 54th minute, junior Jayme Leigh Cargnoni fired a shot that bounced off the crossbar. Lebo collected the rebound and fired a second shot that the Tiger defense blocked out of bounds. In the 58th minute, Kozey chipped a pass over the Clemson defense to Remy who fired a shot just high over the goal. The Deacons took 11 second half shots and six corner kicks.
Junior defender Keisha Garrick was ineligible for the contest after accumulating five yellow cards on the season. Garrick will be available to play in the next match at Florida State.
Wake Forest will next travel to the Sunshine State to take on No. 9 Florida State and Miami. The Deacons and Seminoles will kick off on Friday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. The match Sunday, Oct. 23, against the Hurricanes is scheduled for 1 p.m.
