WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The No. 17 Wake Forest men's soccer team takes a brief hiatus from ACC action when they host Appalachian State Wednesday night. Kickoff at Spry Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. The match is the first between the two schools since 1997.
The Deacs (8-3-2 overall) enter the match with the Mountaineers after back-to-back ties. Wake Forest drew with Clemson, 0-0, on Oct. 12 then drew with Boston College, 1-1, on Oct. 16.
Sophomore goalkeeper Brian Edwards continues to play well for the Deacs. The Charlotte, N.C. native is second in the ACC with six shutouts and ranks third in the league with a 0.84 goals against average. Edwards has allowed just two goals over the last 445 minutes -- good for a 0.40 GAA.
Fellow sophomore Mark Ellington scored his team-leading eighth goal of 2005 in the match against Boston College. Ellington, who started all of one match and scored merely three goals over his first two seasons, is without question one of the most improved players in the ACC. The Swansboro, N.C. native ranks sixth in goals and eighth in points in the conference.
Appalachian State (6-5-1) comes into the battle after its 4-2 victory over Wofford. The Mountaineers are led by Tate Parrish. The sophomore midfielder has scored six goals and assisted on two others to lead the squad with 14 points. Tim Bender and J.T. LaBruyere have each added three goals. Alec Dufty has logged most of the minutes in goal for Appalachian State. The freshman has a 1.72 goals against average.
The Deacs have dominated the all-time series with the Mountaineers winning 13 of the 15 matches. Wake Forest has knocked off Appalachian State 11 consecutive times. The Demon Deacons have not lost to the Mountaineers since Oct. 30, 1986.
Wake Forest returns to ACC action Saturday night against #14 North Carolina. Kickoff at Spry Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
