Winston-Salem, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's soccer team defeated Miami, 2-0, on Sunday morning at Spry Stadium. With the win, the Demon Deacons snap a four game losing streak and improve to 9-7-1 overall and 4-6 in ACC action.
Wake Forest scored the first goal of the match in the 34th minute when junior Kristen Kemp knocked in her first of the season and fourth career goal. Senior Melanie Schneider threw the ball in to junior Jayme Leigh Cargnoni who served the ball across the box. Kemp headed the ball past Hurricane goalkeeper Lauren McAdam.
In the 52nd minute, Miami's Rebecca Tweneboah received a pass deep in Wake Forest territory, but sophomore defender Nichole Lecznar made a hard tackle on the play and prevented the Hurricanes from having a scoring opportunity.
Wake Forest put the game away with just 1:54 remaining in the match when junior forward Elizabeth Remy netted her sixth goal of the season. Junior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Doe punted the ball into the Hurricane half of the field. Remy let the ball bounce once and turned to push up field. With no defenders in sight, Remy dribbled the ball into the box, and fired a shot into the goal.
"This was a solid performance after playing a really tough game against North Carolina on Friday," said head coach Tony da Luz. "The kids really sucked it up, and I thought our backline was super-solid today. They didn't allow many chances today. From Megan Upchurch, Keisha Garrick, Nichole Lecznar - she had a really good game. Melanie Schneider did a good job filling in for Keisha in the back. Erin Baldwin and Jayme Leigh Cargnoni did a great job. Overall, it was a good game and feels good to get back on the winning track."
Doe recorded two saves in recording her fourth shutout of the year. McAdam made five saves in a losing effort for the Hurricanes.
For the match, Wake Forest outshot Miami by a 17-8 margin, including a 7-2 advantage of shots on goal. The two teams combined for 32 fouls, and one yellow card was issued to defender Erin Baldwin in the 85th mintue.
Wake Forest will next play in the ACC Championship in Cary, N.C. The final bracket will be released on Monday by the conference office. The quarterfinals will be on Wednesday, semifinals on Friday and finals on Sunday.
