Deacons host Wolfpack
The eighth-ranked Wake Forest women's soccer team returns home to face in-state ACC foe NC State on Thursday. The Deacons and Wolfpack will kick off at 7 p.m. at Spry Stadium.
Wake Forest holds a 7-5-1 series lead over NC State, including a 7-0-1 advantage in the past eight meetings. The Deacons also own a 3-0 advantage in games played in Spry Stadium.
Last season, Wake Forest downed NC State, 2-0, behind goals from Sarah Kozey and Elizabeth Remy. Jayme Leigh Cargnoni recorded assists on each of the Deacon tallies. Heather Currie recorded the shutout in the victory.
In the eight-game unbeaten streak in the series, the Deacons have outscored the Wolfpack 23-3.
Last time out
Wake Forest traveled to Maryland and Boston College for its first two ACC road contests of the 2005 campaign. The Deacs split the two contests, losing to the Terps on Friday before defeating Boston College on Sunday.
The Terrapins scored the match's only goal when Nataly Arias scored in the 66th minute. Arias scored on a long shot that found the back of the net. Wake Forest junior keeper Kaitlyn Doe could not make a save as the ball found the top of the goal.
The Deacons were unable to capitalize on many chances throughout the match. The Deacs took 21 shots, 10 of which were on goal. Maryland keeper Nikki Resnick shut down the Wake Forest attack registering 10 saves.
Junior forward Elizabeth Remy led the Deacons with five shots, four of which were on goal. Seniors Melanie Schneider and Sarah Kozey each registered four shots in the loss. Freshman Camelyn Dillon, three shots, and junior Jayme Leigh Cargnoni, two shots, also tallied multiple shots for Wake Forest.
After the Deacons and Eagles played a scoreless half, the Deacons took a 1-0 lead in the 56th minute when freshman Amy Smerdzinski took a shot on goal. Junior Jayme Leigh Cargnoni redirected the ball into the net for her second goal of the year and second in three games. Smerdzinski notched her first assist on the season.
Boston College evened the score in the 82nd minute when Maddie Johnson scored. Johnson received a pass from Jenny Maurer off a free kick.
The Deacs scored the gamewinning goal with just 1:20 left in the match. Junior Lindsey Jaco netted a goal in the near right corner. Cargnoni dribbled the ball to the endline and crossed a pass into the box for her second assist of the season.
Prior to the Deacons 2-1 win, Boston College had allowed just one goal all year.
da Luz reaches the century mark
With the win against Boston College, Wake Forest head coach Tony da Luz recorded his 100th win with the Deacons. da Luz has a record of 100-63-15, as the Deacons' head coach. da Luz has also yet to experience a losing season at the helm of the women's soccer team.
For his career, da Luz has a record of 146-105-19. His 146 wins place him 48th all-time among active NCAA Division I coaches.
Deacons in the rankings
The Wake Forest women's soccer team is ranked in four national polls. The Deacons are ranked 8th in this week's adidas/NSCAA poll. Soccer Buzz Magazine ranks Wake Forest 15th. Soccer Times ranks the Deacs 15th, while Soccer America ranks the team 17th in the latest polls.
By earning a national ranking in 2005, the Deacons have been ranked at least one week every season since 1996.
Cargnoni earns honors
Junior Jayme Leigh Cargnoni was named to the Soccer America Team of the Week on October 5th.
Cargnoni scored the first goal of the match in the 56th minute when she redirected in a shot from Amy Smerdzinski past the Boston College keeper.
After Boston College evened the match in the 82nd minute, Cargnoni beat the BC defense to the endline and sent a crossing pass into the box where junior Lindsey Jaco netted the gamewinner with just 1:20 remaining in the match.
Cargnoni now has two goals and two assists on the year. Both her first goal and first assist came in the 4-0 win over Virginia Tech.
Doe in the cage
Kaitlyn Doe continues to impress in goal. The junior from San Diego moved into the cage from her spot as a defender this past season and has excelled in shutting down the opposition. Doe has recorded two shutouts this season, and more than 817 minutes of action, she has given up just six goals. Her goals against average is a paltry 0.66. As a team, Wake Forest has given up just six goals over the last 817 minutes of action. In the shutout win over Virginia Tech, both goalkeepers played in the match preventing either one from earning a shutout.
Kozey rewriting the record books
With her gamewinning goal against Washington State, senior Sarah Kozey broke Emily Taggart's career goals scored record with 30. Taggart, who played for the Deacons from 1998-2001, scored 29 career goals. Kozey, a forward from Halifax, Nova Scotia, added yet another goal against the Hokies to give her 32 career goals.
Kozey also moved into second place in career points with 80. She passed Taggart (76 points) and trails Anne Shropshire (85 points). Kozey also ranks third on the career shots list with 180.
Garrick earns Soccer Buzz honors
Defender Keisha Garrick became the second Deacon this season to be named to the Soccer Buzz Magazine Elite Team of the Week. The publication honored the junior from Toronto for her stellar play against Santa Clara and San Diego. Garrick also was named the Defensive MVP of the Wake Forest/ACC/WCC Challenge. Junior Jayme Leigh Cargnoni, junior Elizabeth Remy, freshman Camelyn Dillon, and senior Melanie Schneider joined Garrick on the all-tournament team.
Remy's hot start continues, named ACC Player of the Week
Deacon forward Elizabeth Remy got off to a blazing start. The junior Norman, Okla., native scored two goals and registered five assists in the opening weekend to amass nine points. Remy played a role in seven of the first nine Deacon goals scored. In recognition of her great start, the ACC named Remy its ACC Player of the Week for August 30. Remy also earned national honors from Buzz Magazine and Soccer America as both publications named Remy to their weekly teams of the week (Aug. 30).
In the ACC/WCC Challenge, Remy was named the Offensive MVP as well as named to the all-tournament team. She netted her third goal of the season.
Against Washington State, Remy recorded two assists. She set up Melanie Schneider's goal which gave Wake Forest an early 1-0 lead, and later in the game created the scoring opportunity for Sarah Kozey's recordbreaking goal.
Prior to this season, Remy had scored 13 goals and registered six assists. Through just six games of her junior campaign, the forward already has four goals and seven assists. The seven assists places Remy in a tie for fourth for most in one season. She stands just three behind the single season record.
Spreading the wealth
This season, 11 players have scored 24 goals. Three more Deacons who have not scored a goal have registered assists, including freshman Camelyn Dillon who has three.
Hanley out indefinitely
Deacon midfielder Kristina Hanley is out indefinitely with a collar bone injury. The sophomore had started the first eight games of the season in the midfield and had recorded a goal and an assist. Last season, Hanley missed the last seven games after tearing an ACL.
Fearless freshmen setting records
In their first career game, the Deacon freshmen stepped up when it mattered most. Trailing 1-0 in the match, midfielder Amanda Lebo netted a goal in the 25th-minute tying the game. Lebo collected a blocked Elizabeth Remy shot and fired a shot past the keeper. In the second half, midfielder Amy Smerdzinski knocked in a shot from 20-yards out into the upper right corner of the goal. In the 83rd-minute, forward Whitney Berry rebounded her own missed shot and rocketed a shot past the Seahawks' goalie. Freshman midfielder Camelyn Dillon recorded an assist on Berry's goal.
The three goals scored marked a Demon Deacon record. Three freshman had never scored a goal in their first career game before this season. The last time three freshman scored a goal in a game came last season when current sophomores Maggie Horne, Kristina Hanley, and Amber Bettenhausen each netted a goal versus Davidson.
So far this season, the freshmen have recorded four goals and six assists.
A tough road
The Demon Deacons once again face one of the toughest schedules in America. Although, playing in the ACC gives the Deacons little choice in playing a difficult slate.
Including the Deacs, six ACC schools earned top-25 rankings. Perennial powerhouse North Carolina (1st adidas/NSCAA, 1st Soccer Buzz, 1st Soccer America, 1st Soccer Times), Virginia (5th a/N, 5th SB, 5th SA, t5th ST), Boston College (10th a/N, 10th SB, 9th SA, 10th ST), Duke (12th a/N, 11th SB, 11th SA, 12th ST), and Florida State (17th a/N, 6th SB, 12th SA, 9th ST) represent the conference.
The Deacs also played Santa Clara to a 0-0 double overtime tie. The Broncos are ranked in the top-12 in each of the four major polls.
Changing places
Several Deacons have changed positions from last year. Most notably is junior Kaitlyn Doe. Doe moved from her defensive spot in the field into the goalkeeper position.
Junior Jayme Leigh Cargnoni moved from the midfield to the back and has started every contest as an attacking defender.
Sophomores Ashley Spooner, defender to forward, and Megan Upchurch, forward to defender, also changed positions from 2004.
Wake returns top scorers
Out of the 34 goals scored last year, the Deacs return players that accounted for 33 of the scores. Sarah Kozey (12 goals), Elizabeth Remy (seven goals) and Melanie Schneider (six goals) finished 2004 as the leading scorers. Juniors Jayme Leigh Cargnoni and Kristen Kemp netted two goals last season.
Up next The Deacons will travel to Durham on Wednesday, Oct. 12, to face the Duke Blue Devils. The match will kick off at 7 p.m. Duke leads the all-time series 10-3-1, including winning the previous seven meetings. The last Deacon victory came in 1998 as the Deacs downed the Devils 4-1.
Last season, the Deacs lost twice to the Blue Devils, at Spry Stadium, 2-0, and in the ACC Tournament, 3-0.
