HOWIE-IN-THE-HILLS, FL - Playing against the nation's top competition, Wake Forest turned to its seniors Friday and advanced to the second round of the Collegiate Match Play Championship.
The 11th-ranked Demon Deacons beat Augusta State, 2-1-2, to advance to the quarterfinals of the 16-team event at the Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort. Seniors Kyle Reifers and Doug Manchester both won their respective matches and sophomores Webb Simpson and Chad Wilcox halved their matches to beat ASU.
In the second round, Wake Forest trails Arizona in a match that will be concluded on Saturday. The other six remaining teams include Georgia, Georgia Tech, Tennessee, Arizona State, Coastal Carolina and Stanford. The quarterfinals and finals will all conclude Saturday, with the final round set for Sunday.
Manchester, who has been on a recent roll for the Deacons, won his match against Augusta State's Keith Guest, 5 and 4. Reifers topped Jamie Miller 2 and 1. Simpson halved with Stephen Swanepoel and Wilcox halved with Wallace Booth. Junior Sean Moore lost to ASU's Major Manning, Major Manning, 3 and 1.
Arizona, which beat Duke in the opening round 2-2-1, led the Demon Deacons 2-0 when darkness suspended play this afternoon.
The unique event, the final tournament of the fall season for Wake Forest, was based on 2005 national championship finish.
