Box Score

EVANSTON, Ill. - St. John's held the Wake Forest women's basketball team to just 15 points in the second half as the Demon Deacons fell, 70-38, Friday night in the opening game of the Roger and Mildred White Invitational. Freshman Deirdre Naughton scored in double-figures for the fourth consecutive game with 13 points, while pulling down six boards.

Senior Liz Strunk and freshman Yolanda Lavender did not play due to a stomach virus.

Senior Cotelia Bond-Young was the only other Wake player to score in double figures with 10, but along with the rest of the team, failed to hit a three-pointer. The last time the Deacs didn't score any points from beyond the arc was in the 2001 season against Duke.

The Red Storm entered the second half with a 15 point lead and pushed it to 28 with a 17-4 run. Wake Forest made several offensive attempts, but were unable to capitalize. Shooting just 19.2 percent from the floor in the second stanza, the Deacs were outscored, 31-15.

The game, however, did not start out as rough, with the lead changing hands nine times and the two teams knotting the score twice in the first 13 minutes. It wasn't until a seven point run by the Red Storm at 20-19 gave St. John's the advantage. Wake Forest had trouble with a few fouls and St. John's went into the break with a 38-23 lead.

St. John's had three players scored in double-figures, including Angela Clark with 18 and Monique McLean with 15. As a team, St. John's scored 25 points off turnovers and the bench had 26 points.

The Wake Forest women's basketball team (2-2) will play one more game in the Mildred & Roger White Tournament Saturday, Dec. 3 against either Northwestern or Miami (Ohio). Game time on Saturday will be at 2:00 p.m.
