EVANSTON, Ill. - Senior Cotelia Bond-Young scored the game-high 26 points and three others scored in double figures as the Wake Forest women's basketball team defeated Miami (Ohio), 67-61, Saturday afternoon in the consolation game of the Roger and Mildred White Invitational Tournament.

Bond-Young, who closed the tournament with 37 total points, was named to the all-tournament team.

Senior Liz Strunk, who did not play on Friday because of an illness, scored 13 points and added seven rebounds. Freshman Deirdre Naughton also scored in double figures for the fifth consecutive game with 10 points and was one rebound away from a double-double with the team-high nine boards. Freshman Corinne Groves rounded out the Deacs in double figures with a career high 10 points.

Playing once again with Strunk and freshman Yolanda Lavender, who was also out against St. John's, the Deacs jumped out to an early 12-5 lead in the first half. Wake Forest held down an offensive attack by Miami that tied the score at 25 all by answering the Red Hawk's 10-2 run with a 5-2 run that put the Deacs into the break with a 31-27 lead.

In the second half, Miami came out and tied the score again at 37 all, but the Deacs never relinquished the lead. Continuing to pressure, the Red Hawks brought the game within three with just over two minutes left, but Wake Forest closed the game hitting six of eight free throws for the 67-61 victory.

Wake Forest shot 40.3 percent from the field, while Miami shot 40.6. The Deacs had 44 rebounds to the Red Hawks 40 and scored 36 points in the paint to Miami's 20.

The Demon Deacons (3-2) will take a week break for exams before returning to the hardwood. They will next host UNC Greensboro on Dec. 14. Game time against the Spartans is set for 7 p.m.
