Winston-Salem, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's basketball team stayed alive in the 2005 Sportsview.tv Women's National Invitational Tournament with a 78-63 victory over South Florida on Monday night and now moves on to the third round, where the Demon Deacons will face West Virginia, Thursday night at 7 p.m.
In the match up against the Bulls, senior Erin Ferrell led the charge with 20 rebounds, a game, season and career high. Also scoring 18 points, Ferrell earned her 10th double-double of the season. On the night, she also hit her 600th career board, making her the sixth Deacs to reach that milestone. Hitting her 1,000th career point against Charlotte in the first WNIT game, she also became just the fifth Wake Forest player to hit the 1,000/600 mark.
Entering the game, the Demon Deacons hold a 17-14 record, which makes for the most wins since the 1988-87 season when the team went 23-8.
The meeting between West Virginia and Wake Forest will be the fifth overall and first since 1998-99. Leading the series, 3-1, the only victory that Wake has earned over the Mountaineers came during the 1989-90 season, a 74-70 win in Winston-Salem. Only having played in Morgantown once, the Deacs fell by 10, 67-57.
West Virginia enters the third round of the WNIT with a 19-12 overall record and a 13-3 home mark. Earning their place in the third round of the WNIT, the Mountaineers defeated Maine, 74-49 and most recently, St. John's, 68-63. Falling to Notre Dame in the second round for the Big East Conference tournament, the Mountaineers did defeat Pittsburgh, 77-68 in the first round.
In the second round WNIT game against St. John's Yolanda Paige scored 24 points and made all 12 of her free throws, while Meg Bulger leads the team on the season with 19.3 ppg and 5.4 rpg.
If Wake Forest defeats West Virginia, they will move onto the final four to face the winner of the Xavier/Kentucky game that is also being played on Thursday at 7 p.m.
