Winston-Salem, N.C. - Wake Forest senior running back Chris Barclay and junior cornerback Riley Swanson have been suspended for one game this fall for violating athletic department policy, head coach Jim Grobe confirmed today.
Barclay and Swanson, both projected starters, will miss the season opener Sept. 1 against Vanderbilt at Groves Stadium. The two players will also sit out the first week of practice and will be reinstated Aug. 10.
"Chris and Riley are two really good kids," Grobe said. "I am disappointed in their judgment. They made a foolish decision and they will pay a price for it. However, we have never had a problem with either kid, on or off the field, in any way whatsoever.
"I hope this will be a great lesson for them. This will give them an opportunity to show their character, to come back and be good members of the football team and university."
Barclay was a first team All-ACC selection and team MVP in 2004 after leading the ACC in rushing during the regular season for the second straight year (91.8 yards per game). He carried 243 times for 1,010 yards and nine touchdowns last season and is just the 13th player in ACC history to accumulate more than 1,000 yards rushing in consecutive seasons.
Swanson, a redshirt junior, played in all 11 games and started once in 2004. He recorded 49 tackles and five pass break-ups as a sophomore. In 2003, Swanson was named ACC All-Freshman by The Sporting News after producing 41 tackles in 12 games.
Both players will be eligible to play in Wake Forest's second game of the season, Sept. 10 at Nebraska.
