Deacon Football Practice Report
8/11/2005 12:00:00 AM | Football
Today was supposed to mark the beginning of two-a-day practice sessions, but head coach Jim Grobe cancelled the morning workout and saving the first two-a-day for later.
"Our first six practices were at night," Grobe said. "Kids weren't getting off the field until 10:30 or 11 (pm), so we felt like they may need a little more rest. We have to remember that our season opener is still three weeks away. We want to work hard, but work smart."
The Deacons' lone practice today was a scorcher -- a three-hour session in full pads with a heat index of over 100. At the conclusion of practice, the team was introduced to new University President, Dr. Nathan Hatch.
Fan Fest Is Friday Night
Annual Fan Fest is scheduled for Friday beginning at 7 p.m. at Groves Stadium. Admission is free. Student-athletes and coaches from every Wake Forest fall sports team will be on hand.
Scrimmage Is Saturday
Wake Forest will hold its first intrasquad scrimmage Saturday at roughly 9 a.m. in Groves Stadium.
"You'll see a lot of work with the kicking game, at least in the early part of the scrimmage," Grobe said, "then basically we'll just let the kids play a little bit."
Grobe indicated that much of the actual scrimmage will be 1's vs. 2's.
"I think it will be a great opportunity for someone on the second team to show us something and move up the depth chart."
Injury Report
Sophomore LB Jon Abbate (hamstring) did not practice today.
