WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The defending ACC regular season champion and 10th-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team opened up its exhibition season with the annual Black & Gold Game Saturday night in front of 1,887 fans. Senior All-American Justin Moose scored the lone goal for the Gold in a 1-1 tie at Spry Stadium. The Black tallied its only goal on an own goal.
Moose, a NSCAA first team All-American in 2004, gained possession of the ball near midfield and raced down the center of the pitch, beating a defender and slipping a shot under the diving goalkeeper Brian Edwards.
The goal stood until midway through the second-half when the Black benefitted from an unfortunate deflection off the leg of freshman midfielder Jamie Franks. Franks was attempting to clear a cross coming through the box, but the ball ricocheted off his leg and into the goal.
With the game tied, 1-1, each team had a couple solid scoring chances. The freshman duo of Michael Lahoud and Marcus Tracy each created some havoc in the attacking third. Lahoud had two chances thwarted by redshirt freshman Marcus Rein, while Tracy was quite dangerous on the flank.
In addition to Moose's goal, the Gold nearly regained the lead late in the second-half. Senior Marcellus Tennyson found some space inside the Black 18-yard box, but his attempt on goal missed just wide.
Edwards and Rein each played all 70 minutes for their respective sides. Rein recorded a single save, while Edwards was not forced to make a save.
Wake Forest will continue its exhibition schedule at UNC Charlotte on Aug. 22. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. The Demon Deacons final tune up of 2005 will be on Aug. 27 against Furman. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
