GREENVILLE, S.C. - The 18th-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team downed Furman, 2-0, in exhibition action Saturday evening at Stone Soccer Stadium on the Furman campus.
Mark Ellington gave the Demon Deacons the lead at the 34:07 mark. Steven Curfman served a corner kick in front of goal and Ellington rose above the pack to head the cross past Paladin keeper Bryan Amos for the 1-0 lead.
Furman threatened to even the contest just before the half. Sophomore Chris Davis charged onto a Shea Salinas pass inside the six-yard box but was unable to redirect the pass onto net. Salinas set up another promising Paladin attack in the 64th minute when Brian Martin ran onto a through ball only to be denied a goal by Wake Forest goalkeeper Brian Edwards' sliding stop.
Marcus Tracy upped the Wake Forest lead to 2-0 with less than ten minutes remaining. Tracy received a long ball down the right side of the box from Andrew Wright and beat Amos high for the final tally of the match.
Furman outshot the Deacons, 11-8, but were unable to find the back of the net in the 90-minute preseason matchup.
Wake Forest will open the regular season with a loaded field in the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic. Along with two-time defending National Champion and preseason #1 Indiana, #7 SMU and #16 Notre Dame will all be a part of the action. The Deacs will play the Hoosiers on Sept. 2, then face the Fighting Irish on Sept. 4.
