Deacons and Broncos square off in top-25 showdown
No. 21 Wake Forest and No. 5 Santa Clara will meet for the third time in the Wake Forest/ACC/WCC Challenge. Santa Clara owns a 2-0-0 edge in the series. The Broncos have been ranked in each of the two previous meetings, No. 15 in 2000 a 4-1 Bronco win, and No. 7 in 2001 a 1-0 Wake Forest loss.
The last time the Deacons defeated a top-five opponent came a year ago when the Deacons downed No. 3 Virginia in overtime, 2-1.
Last time out
Wake Forest scored three first half goals to seize control of the match and defeat Davidson, 5-1. Sophomore Kristina Hanley scored the Deacons first goal with a shot that Wildcat keeper Bevin English could not corral. Junior Elizabeth Remy registered an assist on the goal. Remy added her own goal after junior Keisha Garrick served a ball to sophomore Ashley Spooner, who found a wide open Remy in the box. Remy recorded her second assist when she received a pass from freshman Amanda Lebo and sent a crossing pass into the box where sophomore Maggie Horne netted a header.
In the second half, Remy dribbled into the box and found senior forward Sarah Kozey who fired a goal from 11 yards out. The Deacons scored their final goal when junior Lindsey Jaco headed in a goal courtesy of a Camelyn Dillon pass.
Remy's hot start continues, named ACC Player of the Week Deacon forward Elizabeth Remy is off to a blazing start. The junior Norman, Okla. native scored two goals and registered five assists last weekend to amass nine points. Remy has played a role in seven of the nine Deacon goals scored. In recognition of her great start, the ACC named Remy its ACC Player of the Week. Remy also earned national honors from Buzz Magazine and Soccer Amercia as both publications named Remy to their weekly teams of the week.
Kozey's assault on the record books
With senior forward Sarah Kozey's goal against Davidson, she now has 28 career goals, which trails Emily Taggert (29 goals; 1998-01) and ties Anne Shropshire (28 goals; 1996-99) for second. Kozey's 12 goals in 2004 tied for the most goals scored in a season with Liz Burnette who netted 12 in 1996.
Kozey also ranks third in career points with 71, trailing Shropshire (85 points) and Taggert (76 points). The senior forward also ranks fifth on the career shots list.
Fearless freshmen setting records
In their first career game, the Deacon freshman stepped up when it mattered most. Trailing 1-0 in the match, midfielder Amanda Lebo netted a goal in the 25th-minute tying the game. Lebo collected a blocked Elizabeth Remy shot and fired a shot past the keeper. In the second half, midfielder Amy Smerdzinski knocked in a shot from 20-yards out into the upper right corner of the goal. In the 83rd-minute, forward Whitney Berry rebounded her own missed shot and rocketed a shot past the Seahawks' goalie. Freshman midfielder Camelyn Dillon recorded an assist on Berry's goal.
The three goals scored marked a Demon Deacon record. Three freshman had never scored a goal in their first career game before this season. The last time three freshman scored a goal in a game came last season when current sophomores Maggie Horne, Kristina Hanley, and Amber Bettenhausen each netted a goal versus Davidson.
