Today's Captains: For the third straight game, Wake Forest's captains were Goryal Scales and Steve Vallos. Wake Forest won the toss and elected to defer. The Deacons kicked off and defended the north goal.

For Starters...
* Several players extended their starting streak during Saturday's game, including Ryan Plackemeier (33), Steve Vallos (26), Patrick Ghee (14) and Matt Robinson (13).
* The Deacons came out in a dime package on defense, allowing Chip Vaughn to make his first career start.
* On offense, the Deacons came out with three wide receivers. One of those three was Cory Randolph, who made his first career start at wide receiver after making 20 career starts at quarterback in the past three seasons.
Randolph Hauls In First Pass...
On Wake Forest's first drive, Cory Randolph made his first reception of the season, good for 25 yards. It was his second career catch. As a quarterback in 2003 against NC State, he made a reception on a trick play.
Mauk Throws First Touchdown Of 2005...
Benjamin Mauk's touchdown pass on Wake Forest's first drive was the first of the season for Mauk. He hit Richard Belton for a 4-yard scoring strike. It was Belton's second touchdown of the year, his first receiving score. The Deacons hadn't scored a touchdown since the fourth quarter of the Vanderbilt game, a span of 66 minutes, or 18 drives.
Barclay's 31st, 32nd, 33rd, 34th Career Rushing Touchdowns...
Chris Barclay's first quarter rushing touchdown was his first of the season and the 31st of his career. It gave him sole possession of the Wake Forest career rushing record, surpassing James MacDougald and Michael Ramseur. The second quarter touchdown was his 32nd, the seventh multi-touchdown game of his career and the first since the North Carolina game in 2004. Barclay added two more rushing scores in the second with a 13 yard touchdown carry, and in the fourth quarter when he scampered for 65 yards.
Pair of Deacons Rush For 100 Yards...
Chris Barclay (210) and Micah Andrews (142) both went over the 100-yard rushing plateau. It marked first time the Deacons have had two players go over 100 yards in the same game since October 1997 against Duke when Herman Lewis (160) and Morgan Kane (146) accomplished the feat.
Deacons Hold Block Party vs. ECU...
Alphonso Smith's punt block in the first quarter was the first of his career. It marked the first blocked punt by the Deacons since the 2002 East Carolina game. Wake Forest has blocked five Pirates kicks (punts, field goals or PATs) since Jim Grobe arrived in 2001. The Deacons blocked a PAT in 2002, Jamie Scott blocked a 2002 punt, Jerome Nichols blocked a 2003 PAT and a 2004 field goal. Wake Forest has blocked 10 kicks in the Grobe era. Half have come against East Carolina.
First Half Offensive Outburst...
Wake Forest's 31 first half points were the most by the Deacons in any half since the North Carolina A&T game last year (35).
Plack Bangs Another 60-Yarder...
For the second straight game, Ryan Plackemeier booted a 60-plus yard punt. His 61-yard touchback in the third quarter was the 10th punt of at least 60 yards in his career.
On ECU's 59-Yard Touchdown Pass...
The 59-yard scoring play from James Pinkney to Aundra Allison for ECU was the longest pass play against the Deacons since October 2003 when Georgia Tech's Reggie Ball hit Jonathan Smith for a 65-yard touchdown pass.
Third Down Improvement...
Wake Forest entered the game with a third down conversion rate of just 26.7 percent, the second-worst in the ACC. However, the Deacons were markedly improved on Saturday. Wake Forest converted 8-of-18 against East Carolina.
Davis Sets New Career-High Rushing Mark...
Wide receiver Chris Davis finished 35 rushing yards, breaking his personal best of 30 yards against Maryland in 2003.
Chris Barclay Record Watch...
All-purpose yards: Moves into seventh all-time with 3,405 yards.
Scoring: Ties James McDougald (1976-79) with 192 career points for fourth. Trails Michael Ramseur (1982-85) by two points.
100-yard rushing games: Has 10 in his career placing in a tie for fourth. Trails leader James McDougald who holds the record with 15.

Checking the Grobe Era record book...
With 44 points, the Deacons posted their second highest point total under Grobe. The Deacons scored 45 points against Clemson in 2003. The 31 first half points marked the fifth highest total in any half. The Deacons amassed 407 rushing yards against the Pirates, shattering the previous Grobe record of 365 versus Clemson in 2003. It also ranks as the fifth-highest single game rushing total in school history. The Deacons also recorded their second fewest passing yards in a game with 69. The Deacons also threw for 69 yards against North Carolina A&T in 2004. The four rushing touchdowns tied for the second most by a Grobe coached team.
The Deacs tallied 476 yards of total offense which ranked as the fourth best under Grobe. With a mark of 34:56 in time of possession, the Deacons held the ball for the fifth longest amount of time under Grobe.
Chris Barclay's 210 yards rushing marked the third highest total under Grobe. He now holds two of the three 200+ yards rushing marks in the Grobe era. Barclay also tied for the most rushing touchdowns under Grobe with his four scores. He tied the mark set by Ovie Mughelli who accomplished the feat at Northern Illinois in 2002.
