Winston-Salem, N.C. - The eighth-ranked Wake Forest women's soccer team lost its ACC opener to 13th-ranked Virginia on Thursday, 1-0. The Deacons fall to 5-2-1 overall on the season.
The Cavaliers (6-2-1) scored the match's only goal in the 17th minute when Noelle Keselica scored on a rebound. Sarah Curtis fired a shot at the top of the goal that Deacon keeper Kaitlyn Doe could only block. The ball fell right to Keselica who fired a shot into the left side of the net.
The Deacons created several scoring opportunities in the second half. With just under 20 minutes left to play, sophomore Ashley Spooner fed a ball to freshman Amanda Lebo down the right side of the field. Lebo passed the ball to an open Whitney Berry who fired a shot from 15 yards out. Cavalier goalkeeper Christina de Vries made a save on the freshman's shot.
Just four minutes later, sophomore Maggie Horne and Spooner worked together to get the ball into Lebo who missed a shot high from 10 yards in front of the net.
With 4:16 remaining in the contest, Virginia fouled junior Elizabeth Remy just a yard outside the box. Senior Melanie Schneider took the kick and saw her shot barely miss the crossbar.
"For the first 20 or 25 minutes, we were emotionless," said head coach Tony da Luz. "We played decent soccer in the first half. We created a bunch of chances. You can't win these games if you don't play with some emotion. We didn't have it as a team. We had chances to win the game, but if you don't put them away you won't win these games."
For the match, de Vries made four saves on Demon Deacon shots. Doe also managed four saves in the loss. Wake Forest out shot Virginia by a 10-8 margin.
Three yellow cards were issued in the match. Deacon junior Keisha Garrick was issued one in the first half. In the second half, Sarah Huffman and Kelly Quinn each were given cards. Quinn crashed into Doe late in the match, causing the junior keeper to lose one of her molars.
Wake Forest will next host Virginia Tech on Sunday. The match will be at Spry Stadium and kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
