Deacons and Toreros meet on Sunday
No. 21 Wake Forest will battle San Diego for the first time in the program's history. The meeting also marks the first time da Luz has coached against his alma mater. da Luz graduated from San Diego in 1985 and began his coaching career with the Toreros. Assistant coach Meghan Suddes Cox spent two years at San Diego before transferring to Wake Forest to compete for the Deacons.
On Friday, San Diego downed Virginia Tech in the opening match in the Wake Forest/ACC/WCC Challenge in double-overtime, 2-1.
Last time out
Wake Forest battled fifth-ranked Santa Clara to a 0-0 tie. Both the Deacons and Broncos had several scoring opportunities over the 110 minute match, but solid defense and goalkeeping kept both teams off the scoreboard.
The Deacon back line of Jayme Leigh Cargnoni, Keisha Garrick, Nichole Lecznar, and Megan Upchurch played the entire match and shut down the Santa Clara attack.
On countless occasions, the back line thwarted scoring opportunities with hard tackles and battles won in the air. The Broncos fired nine shots, with just two being on goal. Doe made her saves in the first period and in the first overtime.
The defense prevented Santa Clara on scoring on five corner kicks and one dangerous free kick in the first overtime. The officials awarded Santa Clara with a free kick when a foul was whistled outside the box on the right side of the field. Bronco forward Tina Estrada fired a shot at the goal, but Doe made a tremendous save to preserve the shutout.
Remy's hot start continues, named ACC Player of the Week
Deacon forward Elizabeth Remy is off to a blazing start. The junior Norman, Okla. native scored two goals and registered five assists last weekend to amass nine points. Remy has played a role in seven of the nine Deacon goals scored. In recognition of her great start, the ACC named Remy its ACC Player of the Week. Remy also earned national honors from Buzz Magazine and Soccer Amercia as both publications named Remy to their weekly teams of the week.
Kozey's assault on the record books
With senior forward Sarah Kozey's goal against Davidson, she now has 28 career goals, which trails Emily Taggert (29 goals; 1998-01) and ties Anne Shropshire (28 goals; 1996-99) for second. Kozey's 12 goals in 2004 tied for the most goals scored in a season with Liz Burnette who netted 12 in 1996.
Kozey also ranks third in career points with 71, trailing Shropshire (85 points) and Taggert (76 points). The senior forward also ranks fifth on the career shots list.
