Deacons face Cougars on Friday, Beavers on Sunday
The eighth-ranked Wake Forest women's soccer team travels to the Pacific Northwest this weekend to meet a pair of Pac-10 foes. Wake Forest will first play on Friday afternoon in Pullman, Wash., against Washington State before traveling to Corvallis, Ore., to battle Oregon State.
The Deacons and Cougars meet for just the second time in the series history. In 2003, Washington State traveled to Winston-Salem to compete in the adidas/Wake Forest Tournament. The Deacons downed the Cougars by a 2-1 tally. Sarah Kozey and A.B. Robbins each netted goals in the victory.
Wake Forest will meet Oregon State for the third time on Sunday. The Deacons own a 2-0 advantage over the Beavers. Again, the last meeting came at the 2003 adidas/Wake Forest Tournament, as the Deacons won 1-0, as Robbins scored the match's only goal. Wake Forest also downed the Beavers, 2-1, in 2002.
Last time out
The Demon Deacons used three goals in the final 15-minutes of play to beat San Diego, 5-1, in the final game of the Wake Forest/ACC/WCC Challenge.
Senior Sarah Kozey gave the Deacons the early lead when she scored a goal in the 11th minute (more on Kozey's goal below). After receiving a pass from freshman Camelyn Dillon, Kozey netted a one-on-one goal through Torero keeper Brittany Cameron's legs.
Junior Taylor Toombs netted the game winning goal in the 32nd minute when she received a pass from Ashley Spooner and fired a shot from 15 yards out. Junior Kristen Kemp also recorded an assist on the goal.
Junior Elizabeth Remy added to the scoring with her third goal of the year in the 76th minute of the match. Senior Melanie Schneider and freshman Whitney Berry also netted goals in the victory.
In the first match of the challenge, Wake Forest battled fifth-ranked Santa Clara to a 0-0 tie. Both the Deacons and Broncos had several scoring opportunities over the 110 minute match, but solid defense and goalkeeping kept both teams off the scoreboard.
The Deacon back line of Jayme Leigh Cargnoni, Keisha Garrick, Nichole Lecznar, and Megan Upchurch played the entire match and shut down the Santa Clara attack.
Deacons continue to climb in national rankings
The Wake Forest women's soccer team moved into the top-10 in the latest poll released by Soccer America. The 10th ranked Demon Deacons were previously unranked in the poll. The Deacons moved up 13 spots in the adidas/NSCAA coaches' poll from 21st to eighth.
Wake Forest also moved into the top-10 in Soccer Buzz Magazine's by placing ninth in the poll. The Deacs moved up eight slots from their previous ranking of 17th. Finally, Soccer Times ranks the Demon Deacons 10th, an improvement from 21st in last week's poll.
Kozey's assault on the record books
There is now a tie atop Wake Forest's all-time goals list. With the match's first goal against San Diego, senior forward Sarah Kozey tied former Deacon Emily Taggart (1998-01) for the career goals scored record. Kozey has two goals on the season and 29 for her career. Kozey broke a second place tie with Anne Shropshire with the goal.
Kozey also ranks third in career points with 74, trailing Shropshire (85 points) and Taggart (76 points). The senior forward also ranks third on the career shots list with 167.
Garrick earns Soccer Buzz honors
Defender Keisha Garrick became the second Deacon this season to be named to the Soccer Buzz Magazine Elite Team of the Week. The publication honored the junior from Toronto for her stellar play against Santa Clara and San Diego. Garrick also was named the Defensive MVP of the Wake Forest/ACC/WCC Challenge. Junior Jayme Leigh Cargnoni, junior Elizabeth Remy, freshman Camelyn Dillon, and senior Melanie Schneider joined Garrick on the all-tournament team.
Remy's hot start continues, named ACC Player of the Week
Deacon forward Elizabeth Remy is off to a blazing start. The junior Norman, Okla. native scored two goals and registered five assists last weekend to amass nine points. Remy has played a role in seven of the nine Deacon goals scored. In recognition of her great start, the ACC named Remy its ACC Player of the Week for August 30. Remy also earned national honors from Buzz Magazine and Soccer America as both publications named Remy to their weekly teams of the week (Aug. 30).
In the ACC/WCC Challenge, Remy was named the Offensive MVP as well as named to the all-tournament team. With one goal on the weekend, Remy now has 11 points to lead the Deacs. She has three goals and five assists.
Doe in the cage
Kaitlyn Doe continues to impress in the goal. The junior from San Diego moved into the cage from her spot as a defender this past season and has excelled in shutting down the opposition. In 335 minutes of action, Doe has given up just two goals. Her goals against average is a paltry 0.54.
Spreading the wealth
This season, 10 players have scored 14 goals. Four more Deacons have registered assists.
