Winston-Salem, N.C. - Wake Forest senior forward Sarah Kozey scored the gamewinning goal in the 70th minute to lift the eighth-ranked Deacons over Washington State, 2-1. The goal marked Kozey's 30th career goal which broke the school record previously held by former Deacon Emily Taggart.
The Demon Deacons fought against a scrappy Cougar team in a hostile environment to improve to 4-0-1 on the season.
Wake Forest scored the first goal of the match in the 17th minute when Elizabeth Remy pressured the defense and won the ball. The junior forward fed the ball to midfielder Melanie Schneider in the box who fired a shot that found the back of the net. The goal marked the senior's second on the season.
Washington State tied the match up in the 27th minute when Anna Miller netted a goal. Deacon keeper Kaitlyn Doe was unable to corral the shot.
In the second half, the Deacons came out and matched the Cougar intensity. In the 70th minute, Kozey pushed through the right side of the box and received a pass from Remy. After a couple of touches, the Halifax, Nova Scotia, native fired a shot into the left side of the goal. Kozey also moved into a tie for second place in the career points list. Her 76 career points ties Taggart, and stands nine behind Anne Shropshire.
"We didn't come out with much spirit to start," said head coach Tony da Luz. "Washington State played hard and came at us and pressured us, winning a lot of fifty-fifty balls. We couldn't get into any rhythm. The first goal was a result of Elizabeth Remy's hard work.
"In the second half we came out slow and switched to a 3-5-2 and that opened it up, and Kozey scored a great goal. We controlled the play with our width. I thought Amy Smerdzinski gave us good minutes and played with composure out wide. Nichole Lecznar also did a great job in the back with her ball winning."
The Deacons will next play Oregon State on Sunday in Corvallis, Ore. The Deacons' next match in North Carolina will be Friday, Sept. 16, when they travel to take on the Spartans of UNC Greensboro.
