WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -
Two more awards for Wake Forest junior Julian Valentin came in this week as a result of his stellar play against Connecticut and North Carolina from the week of Oct. 9-15. In addition to being named to the Team of the Week by SoccerTimes.com, Valentin took top honors as the Player of the Week from Soccer America. These two honors came on the heels of his ACC and TopDrawerSoccer.com Player of the Week awards that came earlier in the week.
The Lancaster, Pa., native scored game-winners in both matches against the nationally-ranked opponents. Against then-23rd ranked UConn on Oct. 10, Valentin notched the golden goal in the 103rd minute of double overtime, heading in the free kick from senior Ryan Solle. Three days later, the All-America candidate put in another game-winner, scoring the lone goal in the team's match at then-third ranked UNC. A defender, Valentin was also instrumental in preserving shutouts against both teams.
The Demon Deacons (13-2-1), who are ranked as high as second in the latest CollegeSoccerNews.com poll, have extended their unbeaten streak to seven games after shutting out UNC-Greensboro on Wednesday night. The team is 6-0 on the road and 7-2 against nationally-ranked opponents.
Wake Forest stays home to play NC State on Saturday night at Spry Stadium when senior night ceremonies will be conducted. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
