WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -
With its 2-1 win over Virginia in Charlottesville over the weekend, the Wake Forest men's soccer team secured its place as ACC regular season co-champions for the 2006 season. It marks the third time in five seasons that Wake has earned this honor. The team finished in a first-place tie with Duke after both teams ended the season with identical 5-2-1 league records.
With head-to-head matchups as the tie breaker, the Deacs will enter the ACC Tournament as the No. 2 seed due to their 4-3 loss to the Blue Devils on Sept. 8. Wake will play No. 7 seed North Carolina at noon on Weds, Nov. 1, in its first-round match-up at the Maryland Soccer Foundation in Boyds, Md. Should the Deacs win, they would play the winner of the Virginia-Clemson game on Friday, Nov 3., at 5:30 p.m. The championship game is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 5, at 1:10 p.m.
With the Deacons beating then-third ranked Virginia on Friday night, coupled with a previous-No. 1 SMU loss over the weekend, Wake Forest took its place as the No. 1 team in the nation in several national polls. ColllegeSoccerNews.com as well as Soccer America both have the Deacons as the top-ranked team in the country. The Deacs are expected to take the top spot in the NSCAA and the Soccer Times polls once this week's editions are released.
The Deacons are riding a five-game winning streak and nine-game unbeaten streak into the ACC Tournament.
