WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -
Two Wake Forest men's soccer players were recently honored by Soccer America for their play during the 2006 season. Junior Julian Valentin garnered First Team All-American honors while freshman Zack Schilawski was selected to the Freshmen All-American Second Team.
Valentin, a junior from Lancaster, Pa., has enjoyed an accolade-laden postseason. In addition to his Soccer America selection, the defender was named to the NSCAA All-America Second Team, All-South Region First Team and the All-ACC First Team. Valentin, who was recently invited to the United States U-20 national team camp as it prepares for the 2007 U-20 World Cup, also performed well in the classroom where he earned ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District honors. He had four goals and one assist on the season while helping the team to a school-record 13 shutouts. All four of his goals were game-winning or game-tying strikes.
Schilawski, a forward from Raleigh, N.C., broke the Wake Forest freshman record by playing in 25 games in his rookie campaign. He finished the year tied for second on the team with six goals to go with his four assists. Three of his goals came in the NCAA Tournament, where he helped the Deacons advance to the program's first College Cup. Schilawski was also honored as a member of the All-ACC Freshmen team.
