Women's Soccer Continues Spring Season Saturday

Winston-Salem, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's soccer team will resume its spring season schedule on Saturday as the Deacons head to Virginia Tech to face Vanderbilt and Kentucky. Wake Forest is 1-0 in the spring after knocking off Charlotte, 2-0.

Wake Forest will face Vanderbilt at 11 am before playing Kentucky at 2 pm. Virginia Tech will also play the two SEC schools.

Wake Forest won its spring season opener 2-0 over a solid Charlotte team. The Demon Deacons controlled the game outshooting the 49er's 20-2 and defensively holding them to two shots. The new starting backline of Katherine Skarbek, Amanda Lebo, Nikki Lecznar, Laura Colven along with Kaitlyn Doe in goal did a great job in the first half before Erin Baldwin, Christie Carter and Keisha Garrick finished off the shutout.

Wake Forest attacked consistently throughout the first half leading to the first goal at the 30 minute mark. Kristen Kemp played Remy through on the right side and Remy hit a great cross to find Maggie Horne sitting wide open at the back post for a perfectly placed header off the far post.

Remy again combined with Camelyn Dillon at the left side of the penalty box, Dillon cut an oncoming defender and hit a left footed shot over the Charlotte keeper from about 20 yards out.

The Deacons created four or five solid chances in the first half around goal with Horne, Lindsay Jaco, Jayme Leigh Cargnoni and Kemp just missing from close range. Remy provided the supply by consistently dribbling past 49er defenders to produce crosses.

The second half saw Wake control possession and produce some quality chances. Horne hit the crossbar from 20 yards and Ashley Burney headed a Remy cross just over the bar.

Overall, it was a solid opening game effort from the Deacs while auditioning players in new positions. Amanda Lebo played with confidence in the backline, dribbling to her hearts content and Nikki Lecznar was performing very well until her front teeth met an inadvertent 49er elbow and had to leave the game for a dental makeover. She is recovering quickly.
