The Wake Forest women's soccer team continued its spring season over the past two weekends competing in the ACC/SEC Challenge in Blacksburg, Va. and the ACC Spring Tournament in Cary, N.C. The Demon Deacons knocked off Vanderbilt, 2-1, before falling to Kentucky, 1-0, in the ACC/SEC Challenge. The Deacs won the ACC Spring Tournament in thrilling fashion knocking off Duke, Virginia and North Carolina en route to the title.
At Virginia Tech, the conditions were extremely cold and windy with a few snow flurries to overcome. Wake Forest started with a win against a solid Vanderbilt team getting two goals from sophomore Maggie Horne. Both assists were credited to Elizabeth Remy as she put Horne through on a one-on-one with the goal keeper for her first goal, and crossed a ball to the near post to Horne for the second goal. Horne finished the plays off with great composure. The Deacons put together a solid team performance and withstood a late charge from Vanderbilt for the win.
In the second contest, Wake Forest looked out of rhythm against a tough Kentucky team. The Deacons did not deal with the pressure very well and failed to create many solid chances. Wake did put on some late pressure, throwing many players forward but was unable to tie the game. Overall, the weekend was productive and will help down the line. Wake Forest had to play through some very adverse conditions, and it was a test of the team's character.
The Deacons resumed play this past weekend in Cary at the ACC Spring Tournament. Wake Forest posted three back-to-back-to-back wins on Saturday to win the event. Eight ACC teams were in attendance (North Carolina, Duke, Clemson, NC State, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Boston College and Wake Forest) in the win and advance format. The Deacons played three 50 minute games in a row at 11 am, noon and a 1 pm final in a grueling day of soccer.
In the opening match, Wake Forest beat Duke, 1-0, on a Katherine Skarbek goal. Amanda Lebo fed Skarbek with a long through pass, and the sophomore found the far post from an extreme angle for the gamewinning goal. Goalkeeper Kaitlyn Doe and the defensive back line provided stellar play not giving up any dangerous chances.
Wake then defeated Virginia, 2-0, on goals by Maggie Horne and Meghan Upchurch. Horne got through the left side of the box and beat the goalkeeper to the near post. Remy then drove a cross to the near post and Upchurch flew in to score on a diving header. Again, Doe and the backline were fantastic in defense.
Wake battled North Carolina to a 0-0 tie in the final and won as Doe saved the Tar Heel penalty kick, and Remy stepped up to convert her penalty for the win. Doe had a very strong showing in the goal, Kristina Hanley did a great job in her new position of centerback and Camelyn Dillon was a rock in centermidfield. The team effort was fantastic all day. There was an unwavering team commitment to supporting each other and winning the tournament.
Wake Forest will next compete this weekend at Spry Stadium in a pair of games against VCU and UNC Greensboro.
