Cleveland, OH - Chris Barclay has signed a one-year contract with the Cleveland Browns. Barclay reports to the Browns this weekend for mini-camp.
"I'm excited to get an opportunity. I'm just going to try to make the most of it. I'm excited to get to Cleveland, get to work and learn the offensive schemes. I'm going to give it my best shot," Barclay said. "The Browns have made some big moves in the offseason, acquiring Ted Washington and Willie McGinest, just to name a few. Coach (Romeo) Crennel has the Browns heading in the right direction and I'd like to be a part of that."
Barclay is one of six running backs currently on the Browns roster, joining seven-year veteran Reuben Droughns, former Boston College star William Green, Lee Suggs out of Virginia Tech, Jason Wright, a two-year veteran, and Jerome Harrison, who was taken in the fifth round of last weekend's draft from Washington State.
Barclay is only the second Wake Forest player to ever sign with the Browns, joining quarterback Freddie Summers (1969-71).
Barclay was the 2005 ACC Player of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year and a three-time All-ACC selection. The native of Louisville, Ky., carried 218 times as a senior for 1,127 yards and 10 touchdowns. Barclay led the ACC in rushing yards, rushing attempts and all-purpose yards (1,508).
Barclay leaves as Wake Forest's all-time leading rusher (4,032 yards) and scorer (40 touchdowns). He ended his career as the ACC's fifth-leading rusher of all-time, seventh in rushing touchdowns and ninth in total touchdowns. Barclay is the only player in ACC history to lead the league in rushing during the regular season in three straight years.
