WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's soccer team topped the list of Demon Deacon squads for not only the highest grade point average during the spring semester, but also for the most volunteer hours during the 2006 school year.
"Academic excellence and community service have become a strong part of our team culture," head coach Tony da Luz said. "Our players have shared so many great experiences together through volunteering. I want to thank Jane Caldwell, Sherry Long, Julie Griffin, Dwight Lewis and all the staff for creating such a positive environment in Academic Support and Community Service. I also want to thank my players for being such great kids. The whole atmosphere promotes a unique balance in our student-athletes and helps make Wake Forest a special place."
Earning a combined grade point average of 3.225 for the spring semester, 75 percent of the team earned Dean's List honors. In addition, the Demon Deacons earned the highest cumulative grade point average through the spring semester at 3.141. The women's golf team followed with 50 percent of the team on the Dean's List and a 3.038 spring grade point average.
The Demon Deacons volunteered a total of 196 hours, which calculates to 16 percent of the total 1257.75 hours that Wake Forest student-athletes donated. The women's soccer team participated in a number of different activities designed to give back to the community, including Santa's Helpers, Project DESK and a Katrina relief project.
