Aug. 10, 2006
Tonight's Practice (#6): Full pads
Weather: 84 degrees and humid
Big plays: During 6-on-6 drills, DB Chip Vaughn made a beautiful diving pass break up along the right sideline. The pass was from QB Benjamin Mauk intended for TE Zac Selmon who went barreling through a rubber trash can between the two practice fields. On the very next play, WR Kevin Marion hauled in a deep out from Mauk and then outraced DB Josh Gattis to the corner for a touchdown.
Snapshot: During the past four years, only eight Wake Forest true freshmen have seen action. Jim Grobe and his staff prefer to preserve a year of eligibility unless the individual can be an impact player as a true freshman. Players like Chris DeGeare, Jeremy Thompson, Chris Barclay and Ryan Plackemeier are examples. The one true freshman this fall who has the best chance of getting onto the field is punter Dan Caldwell. The native of Oxford, Ala., resembles Plackemeier physically, but isn't worried about trying to fill his shoes. "I felt honored when I was asked to come here to replace Ryan," Caldwell said. "But as of now, I don't think about it. Ryan is a (Seattle) Seahawk now. All I can do is the best I can do and give what I have to the team."
In the meantime, Caldwell is busy making the adjustment from high school football to life in the Atlantic Coast Conference. "In high school, there is a little bit more time for the punter. The biggest adjustment has been a faster snap and getting the ball off quicker."
Injury Report: The following players did not practice today: DE Matt Robinson (knee).
Next Practice: Friday, 8:00 p.m. on campus
