Wake Forest Draws With Ohio State, 5-5

COLUMBUS, OHIO - Senior Kristen Kemp, sophomore Amy Smerdzinski and freshman Allie Sadow each added a goal and an assist, as the Wake Forest women's soccer team closed out exhibition action with a 5-5 draw against Ohio State, Wednesday morning at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Wake Forest and Ohio State played a three-period match of 30, 45 and 30 minutes, respectively, to commence the 2006 season. Five different players found the back of the cage, while senior Taylor Toombs added a pair of assists. Ohio State's Lisa Grubb added a pair of goals for the Buckeyes and three others scored in the exhibition match.
Ohio State began the scoring 2:56 into the game as Grubb scored an unassisted goal from the right side. Kemp and Jayme Leigh Cargnoni put the Deacs up by one with with two goals in a two minute time span.
The lead switched again as the Buckeyes scored back-to-back goals in the 23rd and 25th minute for the 3-2 advantage. Freshman Jill Hutchinson knotted the score at three-all with a header in the corner of the net and just over four minutes later, Sadow put the Deacs ahead with a goal from a corner kick that was distributed by Toombs.
Two minutes after Sadow's goal, OSU answered and knotted the score once again as Melissa Miller put it in off a corner kick. Carla Arbulu gave Ohio State a short-lived 5-4 advantage with a goal inside the 6-yard box, but Smerdzinski tied the score at 68:45 with the final goal of the game.
Senior Kaitlyn Doe played 60 minutes in goal for the Deacs, while freshman Laura Morse played for 45 minutes and had three goals against. Both Doe and Morse each had one save. As a team, the Deacs took 16 shots and 10 corner kicks, while the Buckeyes fired off 14 shots and had six corners.
The Demon Deacons will open their season at the Santa Clara/adidas Tournament on Friday, Aug. 25. Wake Forest will face Santa Clara at 7 p.m. (PST).
