WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest's 29-game regular season schedule, announced today, includes four non-conference road games, home games with two Southeastern Conference teams and a mid-December Atlantic Coast Conference game.
"I am excited about the schedule" Wake Forest head coach Skip Prosser said. "It accomplishes many of our goals with our non-conference slate: two games against Big East opponents, two games against SEC schools, and two challenging road games at NCAA Tournament teams Bucknell and Air Force."
The Demon Deacons have non-conference road games at 2006 NCAA Tournament participants Bucknell (Nov. 14) and Air Force (Nov. 29), and at Big East Conference opponents DePaul (Dec. 13) and South Florida (Dec. 29).
The game against Bucknell will pit Wake Forest head coach Skip Prosser against his son, Mark, who is an assistant coach for the Bison. The Deacons, who haven't played Bucknell since 1991, will be the first ACC team to ever play the Bison in Lewisburg, Pa.
Wake Forest's Nov. 29 game at Air Force gives the Deacons two road games against 2006 NCAA Tournament teams in the month of November. The Deacons will meet Air Force for just the second time and for the first time ever in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Wake Forest continues its series with the Big East's DePaul, which surprised the Deacons last season in Joel Coliseum. Wake Forest will play the Blue Demons in the Chicago area for the first time ever.
The Dec. 29 game at South Florida will be played at Tampa's St. Pete Times Forum, home of the 2007 ACC Tournament. The Deacons and Bulls have not met in more than 20 years, when the two teams met in the 1985 postseason NIT. The late December game will be the first of three trips to the Sunshine State for the Deacons, who later travel to Miami and Florida State. The WFU-South Florida game will be part of a double-header with Florida State and Providence.
The Demon Deacons' non-conference schedule also includes home games with Vanderbilt (Nov. 21) and Georgia (Dec. 2) out of the SEC. Wake also hosts James Madison, Elon, Appalachian State, Gardner-Webb and East Carolina.
The Twin City Classic - Wake Forest's annual game against cross-city Winston-Salem State - takes on more meaning when the two teams meet this season on Feb. 6 at Joel Coliseum. The Deacons and Rams met the previous two seasons in exhibition contests, but with Winston-Salem State joining the NCAA Division I ranks this season, this year's meeting will count.
Wake Forest opens ACC play in mid-December - Dec. 17 at Virginia Tech. The last time the Deacons played an ACC game in December Wake Forest won a 119-114 triple-overtime thriller at North Carolina on Dec. 20, 2003. The Deacons haven't started ACC play this early in a calendar year since playing at Maryland on Dec. 3, 1998. For the third straight year, Wake Forest and Virginia Tech will meet just once during the regular season.
The Deacons will play North Carolina twice in the regular season for the first time since 2003-04. Wake Forest also plays two regular season games against Miami, NC State, Georgia Tech and Virginia.
Wake Forest plays just one regular season game against ACC opponents Boston College, Clemson, Duke, Florida State, Maryland and Virginia Tech. The Deacons will not play Duke twice in the regular season for the first time since 1921.
The Deacons will close the regular season with a home game against Virginia (March 3), marking the first time since 2000 that Wake hasn't closed the season against NC State.
"The ACC will be as strong as ever," Prosser said. "Our goal is that our non-conference schedule prepares us well for the rigors of our ACC schedule, especially the tough opener at Virginia Tech."
Wake Forest kicks off the 2006-07 regular season against James Madison Nov. 11 at Lawrence Joel Coliseum. The Deacons and Dukes have never previously met on the hardwood.
The Demon Deacons, who have 11 freshmen and sophomores on the roster, will get an early start this season. Wake Forest will get 10 days of practice later this month in preparation for a Labor Day weekend trip to the Bahamas.
"The preseason trip to the Bahamas will allow us to look at the new freshmen, plus the opportunity to try many different combinations with a very young team," Prosser said. "These practices can be a big building block as we prepare for formal practice in October."
