WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - No. 1 North Carolina posted its 10th shutout in the last 12 games, and sophomore Garry Lewis scored his first goal as a Tar Heel in a 1-0 victory over UCF Sunday at the Wake Forest adidas Classic at Spry Stadium. UNC also defeated William & Mary Friday to post a 2-0-0 record at the event.
Senior goalkeeper Justin Hughes made a pair of second-half stops to pick up his second shutout on the season and the 15th of his career. Dating to the start of last season, the Tar Heels (2-0-0) have 17 shutouts in a 26-game span.
Carolina was aggressive early in the match and broke through with its lone goal in the 10th minute. Lewis, a transfer from St. John's, headed home his first score in Carolina Blue from six yards out on assists from Michael Callahan and Michael Harrington. Callahan sent a corner from the right side to Harrington at the top of box, who headed it to Lewis in front of the goal.
Carolina outshot UCF 7-2 in the first half, but the Golden Knights (0-2-0) held possession for much of the second frame and posted a 5-3 edge on the shot chart. Until the final minutes of the match, the Tar Heels had just one shot in the second frame, a blast off the cross bar from freshman Zach Loyd in the 68th minute.
UCF keeper Marcus Rein made five stops and allowed the one goal. The Golden Knights also had a team save, as UNC's Corey Ashe heeled a ball at the far post in the third minute of play that was stopped by UCF defender. Carolina finished with a 10-7 edge in shots and a 6-2 advantage on corners.
The Tar Heels are back in action at next weekend's Carolina Nike Classic at Fetzer Field. UNC will face Ohio State at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Penn State at 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Wake Forest rounds out the four-team field.
