DALLAS - Wake Forest junior running back Micah Andrews has been selected as a candidate for the 2006 Doak Walker Award, presented annually to the college football's best running back. The SMU Athletic Forum announced the preseason list Thursday.
The list of preseason accolades for Andrews continues to grow. Earlier this summer, he was selected first team preseason All-ACC by The Sporting News and College Football News and second team preseason All-ACC by Athlon and Lindy's. The Sporting News ranked Andrews as the 17th-best running back nationally. College Football News put Andrews on its preseason top 100 Heisman Trophy candidates list.
Andrews, a 5-foot-10, 215-pound running back from Duluth, Ga., is entering his first season as the full-time starter at Wake Forest. He replaces 2005 ACC Player of the Year Chris Barclay. Andrews started just three games last season, but finished seventh in the ACC in rushing. He had the highest rushing average in the ACC (5.7 yards per carry) among those with at least 100 season attempts. Andrews was named ACC Offensive Back of the Week after rushing for 254 yards in last year's season opener against Vanderbilt, the second-best single game rushing performance in school history.
Andrews is one of 50 running backs from across college football on the Doak Walker Award list of candidates.
The award, which is celebrating its 17th year, is named for SMU's three-time All-American running back Doak Walker. It is the only major collegiate award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate within one year of other students of the same classification.
The SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will select the semifinalists on November 15, and the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee will choose the finalists on November 16. The recipient of the 2006 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on ESPN during the Home Depot College Football Award Show on Thursday, Dec. 7. The Doak Walker Award Presentation Banquet will be held at The Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas, Texas, on Thursday, Feb. 15, 2007.
