2006 Wake Forest Preseason Football Report #1

Aug. 4, 2006
Today's Practice (#1): Helmets and shorts
Weather: 88 degrees and humid
Big plays: On one of the first plays of 7-on-7, CB Alphonso Smith, who now wears number two, stepped in front of a pass for the first interception of the preseason. The play prompted cheers from his defensive teammates. RB Kevin Harris made an acrobatic catch on the left sidelines much to the delight of the offensive players.
Snapshot: The first day of football practice was not designed to install new plays or schemes. Rather, the Deacons are starting with the basics. "We'll work on the fundamentals and take it one step at a time," head coach Jim Grobe said. "If you get into too much offense or too much defense too soon, you end up taking a step backwards.
The Deacons are hoping to get more efficiency from the passing game in 2006, without getting away from the dominant rushing attack that has led the ACC in four of Jim Grobe's five seasons at Wake Forest. "For us to have an improved offense, we don't necessarily need to throw the ball more. We just need to complete more passes. If we get a better completion percentage, we can be a better offensive football team."
Injury Report: The following players did not practice today: DE Matt Robinson (knee), QB Zach MacDowall (ankle), DE Zach Stukes (knee).
Next Practice: Saturday, 3:15 p.m. on campus
