DAVIDSON, N.C. - Eighty-nine minutes of hard work finally paid off for seventh-ranked Wake Forest when Marcus Tracy scored the game's only goal in a 1-0 victory at Davidson on Wednesday night.
For Wake Forest (7-1, 1-1 ACC), it was the team's third straight victory. Davidson slipped to 4-5 overall. Wake Forest is off to its best start since the 2002 season when the Deacons were 6-0-2 and finished the regular season with an undefeated record.
Tracy's goal came at the 88:47 mark. Ryan Solle slipped a through ball from the midfield to Zack Schilawski. The freshman sent a pass across the top of the six-yard box to a waiting Tracy. The sophomore from Newtown, Conn., has scored a goal in each of his last three games.
Wake Forest outshot Davidson 15-8 for the game, including a 10-5 barrage in the second half. The Wildcats played a physical match commiting 10 fouls to the Deacons' one in the first 45 minutes.
Wake Forest had the best scoring opportunity in the first half but Steven Curfman's shot was cleared off the line just moments before halftime.
Davidson's best chance came in the 81st minute. Tom Lavan's blast was tipped by Wake Forest keeper Brian Edwards and off the crossbar. It was the fifth shutout of the season for Edwards and the Deacon defense.
The complexion of the match changed in the 85th minute when Davidson's Ryan Adeleye was booked with a second yellow card and sent off. Three minutes and 59 seconds later, Tracy made the Wildcats pay with the gamewinner.
Wake Forest returns home for an ACC match on Saturday night against sixth-ranked and defending national champion Maryland. Kickoff at Spry Stadium is set for 7:00 p.m.
