WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Senior Mark Ellington scored his first goal since coming back from a mild stroke suffered last fall to lead the No. 8-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team to a 2-0 shutout of Coastal Carolina Friday evening at Spry Stadium.
With the Demon Deacons holding a slim 1-0 lead in the 76th minute, Ellington took a breakaway pass from sophomore Michael Lahoud and put it past Chanticleer goalkeeper Aaron Weant from five yards out.
The goal was Ellington's first since suffering a mild stroke late last season. At the time of the stroke in 2005, Ellington was leading the squad with a career-best eight goals.
Sophomore Sam Cronin provided the Demon Deacons' first goal of the night in the ninth minute. Cronin took a pass down the right sideline from redshirt freshman Justin Lichtfuss and beat keeper Benjamin Compton for his second goal of the season.
The assist was Lichtfuss' first on the year.
Redshirt junior Brian Edwards increased his own school record with his 24th career shutout. It was Edwards' sixth shutout in 11 matches this season, giving him and the Wake defense a 0.99 goals-against-average on the year.
Edwards made four saves in goal against the Chanticleers.
Wake out-shot Coastal 16-11, including a 10-3 margin in the first half.
With the win, Wake Forest improves to 9-2 overall. Coastal Carolina falls to 5-5-2 with the defeat.
The Demon Deacons return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 3, when they travel to No. 2-ranked and undefeated Clemson for a 7 p.m. match.
