Wake Forest vs. NC State
Wake Forest will look to build off its strong second-half performance against Virginia, as the Demon Deacons travel to Raleigh to face NC State on Sunday at 3 p.m. The in-state matchup will be broadcast on Fox Sports South. Wake is 8-8 overall and 0-3 in the ACC after its comeback bid fell just short in a 77-70 loss at Virginia on Thursday. NC State is 12-5 overall and 1-1 in league play. The Wolfpack is coming off a 58-40 win at Boston College.
Sophomores Stepping Up
Corinne Groves, Yolanda Lavender and Alex Tchangoue combined for 58 of Wake Forest's 70 points on Thursday. After serving mostly in role-player capacities last season, the trio of sophomores have been the Deacons' go-to players in 2006-07. Lavender has increased her scoring by almost 15 points per game and has more than doubled her assists per game average from last year. Groves has made a marked improvement on the boards, averaging over six more rebounds a game this season. Tchangoue, who worked on her offensive game this past offseason, has increased her scoring output by almost nine points a game.
Last Time Out
The Demon Deacons are coming off a 77-70 loss at Virginia on Thursday. After Wake Forest trailed by as many as 19, the Deacs staged a comeback that pulled them to within four late in the game. With just under three minutes remaining, Wake had the ball, down 63-59. However, a turnover and four straight Cavalier points put the game away. UVa sealed the game at the free throw line, hitting 22-of-23 second-half charity tosses. The Deacons had just six turnovers in the second period. Wake had 19 offensive boards. Virginia shot 33 free throws in the game, making 29 of them. Wake took 19 more shots from the floor than UVa did. Four Deacon players combined for 66 points.
Next Up...
The Demon Deacons return home to face Virginia Tech on Thursday, Jan. 18, at 7 p.m. Wake is looking to avenge a 74-54 loss to the Hokies on Jan. 2 in Blacksburg. The Deacs will then travel to Maryland to play the defending national champion Terps on Jan. 21. The Wake Forest-Maryland game will be broadcast on CSTV.
