Wake Forest, Virginia Meet In Sunday Matinee At John Paul Jones Arena
Wake Forest, looking to snap a three-game losing streak, travels to Virginia Sunday afternoon for the Demon Deacons' first look at John Paul Jones Arena (1:00 p.m./Raycom-Lincoln Financial TV).
The Demon Deacons, 9-8 overall and 1-4 in the ACC, are coming off a 62-40 loss at 14th-ranked Duke Thursday night. Wake Forest scored its fewest points since 1999 and tied its second-fewest point total since joining the ACC in 1953-54.
Senior center Kyle Visser (17.9 ppg and 7.8 rpg) has been the consistent leader for the Deacons all season. He has scored in double figures in every game and ranks among the ACC leaders in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage and blocked shots.
Virginia, 10-6 and 2-2, is coming off an impressive 103-91 win over visiting rival Maryland Tuesday night. Sophomore Mamadi Diane (26 points) and junior Sean Singletary (25 points) combined for 51 points in the win.
The Cavaliers feature one of the nation's best backcourt duos in Singletary (19.0 ppg) and senior J.R. Reynolds (16.2 ppg). Virginia averages better than 81 points and eight three-point field goals per game and the Wahoos are out-rebounding opponents by nearly seven boards per contest.
Wake Forest leads the all-time series, 63-58. Virginia won last year's only meeting, 75-73, in Charlottesville.
Wake Gets First Look At UVA's New Digs
Wake Forest will play in Virginia's new facility, John Paul Jones Arena, for the first time Sunday afternoon.
When playing in ACC arenas for the first time, Wake Forest has won three times -- at Miami in 2005, at Georgia Tech in 1965, and at Clemson in 1969.
Wake Forest is probably glad to see Virginia's old facility, University Hall, go the way of the dinosaur. The Deacons went 9-30 against Virginia at U-Hall.
