Wake Forest vs. Winston-Salem State
Wake Forest will face its last non-conference opponent of the season when city rival Winston-Salem State comes to the Joel for a 7 p.m. matchup. The Demon Deacons are looking to snap a nine-game losing streak. Wake enters the weekend 8-11 overall and 0-6 in ACC play. The Deacs are coming off an 83-60 loss at Maryland on Sunday. The Lady Rams are 5-18 overall and have lost eight of their last nine games, including a 67-53 setback at Delaware State on Wednesday.
Winston-Salem Turf War
Wake Forest and Winston-Salem State will battle for city supremacy tonight. The two Triad schools have not met during the regular season since the 1980-81 campaign. Last season, the Demon Deacons and Lady Rams hooked up in an exhibition contest that saw Wake dominate in a 97-43 win at the Joel on Nov. 3, 2005. Wake Forest holds a 3-0 advantage over Winston-Salem State in regular season games. The teams met twice during the 1979-80 season and once in 1980-81.
Last Time Out
The Demon Deacons are coming off an 83-60 loss at defending national champion No. 3/3 Maryland on Sunday. Despite the ultimate outcome, Wake Forest was able to outscore the Terrapins 44-42 in the second half. The Deacons shot 45.2 percent (14-of-31) in the second period, but a big first half by the Terps put the game out of reach early. Wake shot just 18.2 percent (6-for-33) and was out-rebounded 35-15 in the first half. Maryland out-scored Wake 18-2 in second chance points for the period, en route to a 41-16 halftime advantage. The game was a homecoming for a few Deacons, including Yolanda Lavender and Courteney Morris. Both had large contingents of supporters at the game.
Next Up...
Wake Forest will complete a busy weekend with a Sunday afternoon ACC matchup with Georgia Tech. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. The Demon Deacons will then host NC State on Thursday, Feb. 1. Both games will be broadcast live on ACC Select. Wake will then be off for a week before traveling to Miami on Feb. 8.
