WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -
The Wake Forest men's soccer team recently held its postseason banquet where five members of the team received awards for their efforts during the record-breaking 2006 season.
The Walt Chyzowych Award, given to the team's most valuable player, was won by sophomore Sam Cronin. A Winston-Salem, N.C., native, Cronin scored four goals and dished out four assists on the season. His stellar play in the midfield was an integral part of the Deacons' success throughout the year. Cronin was also named to the WFU adidas Classic All-Tournament Team, the ACC All-Tournament Team and the NSCAA Second Team All-South Region this season.
The Deacon Award was given to three players: redshirt freshmen Justin Lichtfuss and Will Clayton as well as Steven Curfman. Curfman was recently selected by Real Salt Lake in the MLS SuperDraft. Additionally, Lichtfuss earned the team's academic award.
Sophomore Evan Brown was named the team's most improved player. The Raleigh, N.C., native played in all 25 of the team's games on the back line this season after seeing action in just 14 matches as a freshman.
The Deacs return a wealth of talent to a team that played in its first College Cup in 2006. In addition to their national semifinals appearance, the Deacs won their third ACC regular season championship in the past five years and won a school-record 18 games.
