GREENSBORO, N.C. - Seven Wake Forest men's soccer players picked up Atlantic Coast Conference honors this season, including Dallas, Texas native Corben Bone who was named ACC Freshman of the Year.
Despite sitting out five matches with a minor injury, Bone has posted five goals and seven assists for the season from his midfield position. In the first outings of his college career, the 2006 Parade Magazine High School Player of the Year picked up early season All-Tournament honors for his performances in the Nike Carolina Classic and the Wake Forest University Tournament where he landed four goals through four games.
The Deacons placed an athlete in every position on the All-ACC First Team. Goalkeeper Brian Edwards, who has nine shutouts for 2007, senior defender/midfielder Pat Phelan, who scored back-to-back goals against Appalachian State, sophomore forward Cody Arnoux, who leads the Deacs with 29 points, and junior midfielder Sam Cronin, who has started every game for Wake since his freshman year.
Junior forward Marcus Tracy placed on the ACC's Second Team. Tracy is Wake's second highest goal producer, churning out six for the season with seven assists.
Freshman defender Ike Opara earned a spot along side Bone on the All-Freshman Team. Opara, out of Durham, N.C. started the year filling the void left by the injured senior captain Julian Valentin in the backline. After Valentin's return, Opara proved his value to the Deacs and remained on the d-line while Phelan moved to midfield. Opara has played in every game this season, notching one goal and one assist.
The No. 2-seed Demon Deacons are currently preparing for the ACC Tournament, where they will face seventh-seeded Clemson at the SAS Soccer Complex in Cary, N.C. beginning Wednesday night at 8 p.m.
