ST. THOMAS, U.S.V.I. - The Wake Forest women's basketball team's 2007 Thanksgiving Day probably isn't your typical celebration. Instead of football on TV, they've got basketball on the court. Instead of over-sized sweaters they've got board shorts and tank tops. And instead of turkey, they've got... iguanas?
That's because the Demon Deacons (2-1) are at Paradise Jam 2007, at St. Thomas Island in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The tourney features some of the hottest teams in the nation including Duke, Stanford, Purdue, Old Dominion, and Connecticut.
The Demon Deacons open St. John division competition with Indiana (3-0) on Thursday at 1 p.m. ET. The teams last met at 2006-07 season opener, where the Hoosiers handed Wake a 75-53 loss in Lexington, Ky at the Women's Sports Foundation Tournament.
On Friday, Wake will meet Texas A&M for the first time on the hardwood at 3:30 p.m. Paradise Jam wraps up on Saturday with Wichita State at 1 p.m, also marking the first meeting between the two teams.
In their last outing, Wake Forest suffered its first loss of the season at James Madison, falling 64-53. Forward Corinne Groves led the Deacs with 22 points, tying her career high set last season vs. Winston-Salem State.
The Deacs will return to the mainland late Sunday evening. And yes, there are giant iguanas, but not for Thanksgiving dinner.
