ST. THOMAS, U.S.V.I. - The Wake Forest women's basketball team was in heaven at the Paradise Jam as it posted a 53-46 upset over No. 10/11 Texas A&M on Friday afternoon. The win marks WFU's highest ranked victory outside of the Demon Deacon home court in the program's 36-year history.
The Demon Deacon (4-1) defense stifled the Texas A&M (3-1) shooting game, holding the Aggies to 31 percent from the floor for the A&M's lowest mark this season.
Both teams racked up the foul count early - by the ten minute mark the Deacons had 10 fouls while the Aggies had eight. The Deacons were seven of nine from the line in the half, with Tiffany Roulhac leading the count at three for four.
While the opening minutes were close, the Aggies went on a 9-0 run to get an 18-8 advantage at the 9:08 mark.
Sophomore guard Tiffany Roulhac then hit two from the charity stripe, marking the beginning of a Deacon 9-0 scoring run. Freshman Camille Collier continued to add to the Deacon point tally when she stripped a Texas A&M ball at the top of the key with 5:46 left to play and converted on the fast break to put the Demon Deacons within six points (20-14).
The Demon Deacons took the lead for the first time with three seconds left in the first half. Roulhac charged into the paint with 15 seconds on the clock but an Aggie trap stopped her at the baseline. Roulhac sent the ball to Mekia Valentine who was waiting at the basket to make the layup, putting the Deacs up 26-24 at the half.
The teams tied seven times in the second half but four three throws by Alex Tchangoue in the final nine seconds gave the Demon Deacons the last edge of the game.
The Demon Deacons will be back in action for the final game of St. John's division tournament on Saturday, facing Wichita State at 1 p.m. EST.
