Wake Forest head coach Jay Vidovich
Furman seemed to have Wake Forest's number over the years. Does it feel good to finally get a win over them? (Furman was 6-2-2 in the last 10 matches vs. Wake)
"I don't really focus on it that way. We're a much different team than we were last year and we're much different from what we were in 1999 (Wake's last loss to Furman). Some of these guys were just 14 years old at that time. What we feel good about is that this tournament is a tournament of champions. What a team they were. Nineteen wins. They won their conference championship as well. They're a great attacking team and you could see that in the second half, they threw everything at us and tested us. What feels good is that we just beat a fantastic team."
Do you expect Corben Bone (ACC Freshman of the Year) to play in your next match? (missed Furman game due to hip flexor)
"Corben has made a remarkable improvement since last week. We could have played him this evening but we felt it was in the best interests of everybody to hold him out."
Wake Forest senior Julian Valentin
On his scoring the lone goal of the match:
"We train hard during the week on set pieces and it was nice to get the pay-off at match time. We have some weapons on set pieces and, hopefully, we'll continue to be dangerous throughout the tournament.
Does this tournament look to be a tougher road than last year's tournament?
"Not really. As Coach said, it's a tournament of champions. Everybody's a very good team, everybody deserves to be here. I've been here four years and each year is a different challenge. We're excited about the challenge this year. But it's a tournament of champions and hopefully we'll be a champion."
Furman Coach Doug Allison
On difference in this game and exhibition match earlier in the season...
"Our exhibition match was three days into preseason. We were in the middle of two-a-days. We were still feeling out different players and we have 10 freshmen on the squad. I think it was a game of two halves. I'm really proud of our kids."
On what changed from the first half...
"My guys told me they wanted to change it up at halftime so we did. This is the number one team in the country. They are on their home field. We knew that they would come out ready to play and they did. We tried to cut out the wings and force them on the inside and our strengths came together. We out-shot them in the second half and put pressure on them in the second half."
On being more physical in the second half...
"Our guys were really men out there. Our seniors were men. They really led us out there. They've really led us all year. They've carried the team on their shoulders. When a group of seniors do that, it sends a vibe to the entire team. It's not me. This is a player's game out there, it's not a coaches game. These kids went out there and gave it anything. I don't think any of these kids left anything on the line."
