Wake Forest Takes Exhibition Win Over Mars Hill

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Freshman James Johnson posted a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds in leading Wake Forest to a 104-70 exhibition win over Mars Hill Monday night at the Joel Coliseum.
Johnson scored 10 of Wake Forest's first 13 points as the Demon Deacons jumped to a 15-2 start over the first 5:34 of the game.
Sophomore guard L.D. Williams finished as Wake Forest's leading scorer with 18 points. A total of six Deacons scored in double figures including the trio of Jamie Skeen, Harvey Hale and Jeff Teague who each scored 11 points. Sophomore center Chas McFarland finished with 10 points.
The Deacons led by as many as 19 points on two occasions in the first half, the last at 37-18 with 5:28 remaining following a free throw by Jeff Teague. Mars Hill then went on a 6-2 run to cut the margin to 10 points at 39-29. P.J. Gore hit a 3-pointer and a layup and Jabreel Moton also scored on a lay-up during the Lions' run.
Wake Forest led 45-31 at the break.
The Deacons opened the second half with a 3-pointer by Hale followed by a dunk and a layup from Skeen to take a 52-31 lead just two minutes into the second half. A pair of free throws by Stoney Polite drew the Lions to with 18 points with 16:55 remaining. A Williams dunk put Wake back in front by 20 and Mars Hill was never able to get any closer the rest of the way.
Wake Forest's largest margin on the night was its final margin of 32 points.
The Deacons hit the 100-point plateau on a three-point play by Bobby Hoekstra. The junior muscled his way inside and was fouled and converted the three-point play to give the Deacons a 101-70 advantage. Hoekstra finished the game with five points.
