WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - After leading by just one goal in the first half, the No. 1 Wake Forest men's soccer team broke Tuesday night's match vs. Davidson wide open with four back-to-back goals in an eight minute span to set the final mark at 5-1.
With the win the Demon Deacons improved to 14-1-2 for the season while the Wildcats now stand at 4-13-1.
After 40 scoreless minutes, Wake's Zack Schilawski was the first to strike, taking a quick flick from Marcus Tracy just in front of Davidson goalkeeper Matt McElroy. Schilawski then kicked off Wake's scoring frenzy in the second half when he caught a free kick from Austin da Luz and followed through with his sixth goal of the season.
Da Luz also assisted freshman Jeff Leach in his first career goal at the 68th minute mark. The assist was da Luz's 11th for the season and placed him in second for Wake's season assist record just behind Ryan Solle's mark of 13 in 2005.
Cody Arnoux had back-to-back wringers in the 62nd and 63rd minutes, marking his 11th and 12th goals in 2007. In his first run the Wilmington, N.C. native tapped the ball just behind the goalkeeper and reconnected in time to make the strike. Just a minute later Arnoux had a long range shot from 30 yards that slipped past the keeper who was waiting at the top of the penalty area.
Davidson had several on target shots, including a header from Robby Hoak that ricocheted off the post and nearly put the Wildcats up 1-0 in the first half. But it was Wildcat Robert O'Donnell who made the lone Davidson goal in the 76th minute with a left side run that ended with a short 8-yard shot in the right pocket of net behind Wake goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald.
The Demon Deacons will return to Spry Stadium for the regular season finale on Friday night when they host Virginia at 8 p.m. The game will be televised nationally on the Fox Soccer Channel.
