WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - On Friday the Wake Forest women's basketball team will host Winston-Salem State in the battle of the Twin Cities at 7 p.m. Last season, after trailing by as much as 14 points in the second half, the Lady Rams (0-8) came back to send the contest into overtime. The Deacons (10-2) then outscored WSSU 17-1 in the extra period to set the final score at 82-66.
Last season's meeting was the first time since 1980 that the teams had faced each other on the hardwood. Wake Forest holds a 4-0 advantage since the inaugural meeting in 1979.
The Lady Rams fell 51-70 at Johnson C. Smith in their last outing. Vontisha Woods, one of two WSSU athletes to start every game this season, was the game's high scorer, with 17 points.
Earlier this week the Demon Deacons had a convincing 70-39 win over the College of Charleston at the Joel Coliseum. Junior guard Yolanda Lavender had a career-high eight assists, while forward Corinne Groves was the leading Wake Forest shooter, with 14 points.
Wake Forest will have a nine-day break from competition following the Winston-Salem State game. The team will return to the court on December 30 to face Longwood at 5:30 p.m.
